Fifth District News : Theta Omega Talent Hunt 2010

Miss Kyra Riley, Mr. Ja'Mahl McDaniel, and Miss Amber Calhoun were awarded the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners by a panel of judges in the Theta Omega Talent Competition.  The competition was conducted on Saturday, 2/20/2010, before an audience at Wyatt Hall, Bellarmine University.  Miss Michelle Fulton was a very close 4th place contestant.  The winners were selected from nine highly talented contestants who performed in areas ranging from theatre, voice, piano, dance, and poetry.  Miss Riley, sophomore student at DuPont Manual high school presented a soliloquy from Euripides' Medea, Act I.  Mr. Ja'Mahl McDanies, senior at Butler High School, presented a rendition of John Legend's "Ordinary People".  Ms. Calhoun, senior at DuPont Manual high school, played piano and sang Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing".  Cash awards were made to the three winners.

The Theta Omega chapter's Talent Hunt Committee functions as a subcommittee of the committee on Scholarship to showcase local student's performance excellence in the fine arts pursuant to the guidelines set forth by the international Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.  The competition was initiated in 1945 and has continued unabated for 65 years as a mandated program for all fraternity chapter's.  The 1st place winner will compete in the Kentucky-Tennessee regional fraternity competition in April.  The regional winner will then compete for scholarships later in the year at the international fraternity Conclave that will be held in Raleigh, NC. 

Theta Omega Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was formed to bring about a unio of college men of similar high ideas of manhood, sholarship, persevereance and uplift along with one guiding principle Ophelma Phillia Psurkis.  Consistent with Biblical teachings those guiding principles are dedicated to the preservation of the sanctity of the home, the protection of women and the sanctity of the human soul.
